Things that cost too much

I found this old blog post from who knows when.

There are some things that cost too much in Canada, if you look at the material costs or in comparison to the US. People can argue that the US is a bigger market and they should get cheaper discounts, but still, some prices are just insane.

Here are things that shouldn’t cost too much, but we still get charged the hell of of them:

  • Cell phone charges: Seriously, 15 cents per SMS message (up to 140 characters) doesn’t seem like much, but if you send a lot of them they add up. When you send MMS messages (pictures, sound, etc.), the cost skyrockets even though you’re only sending a few kilobytes. If you wanted to go on the Internet  on your phone in Canada, don’t even bother. Phone companies do this not simply because they need to recoup network costs, but also because they can.
  • Textbooks: The argument is that they’re not mass-produced like paperbacks, but what’s the excuse for continuously reprinting “new” editions? It’s an outright price gouge (probably on the publishers’ part and not the authors’) and professors don’t care since they get free books anyway.
  • Car insurance: I understand if you don’t want to pay for accidents, damages, etc. What if I don’t care about any of that and just want to get my car on the road? Why does it still cost more than a thousand dollars for the most basic coverage?
