Alright?
I just found out the other day that one of my beloved words, “alright”, isn’t even a real word. That’s right, try typing it into a spell checker; it’s flagged as a typo.

Language changes over time, and spellcheck doesn’t. “Alright” isn’t a word, “quote” isn’t a noun, and “a lot” is grammatically incorrect. But you aren’t going to see many people taking points off an essay because you use those. Language has evolved to the point where, as long as the other person understands the intention behind your words, it is considered correct. On the other hand, if you use the word “quote” as a noun in front of me, expect me to roll my eyes and look at you like you have two heads.

By your rules, then, is it alright to have watermelon’s instead of watermelons because alot of supermarkets’ staff spell it wrong? What about your and you’re? They’re in common exchange on the Internet.

No!!! No, none of that is ok. I am not condoning the use of BAD GRAMMAR. Misuse an apostrophe and you will open yourself up to the full extent of my wrath. But… the point is, there are worse things that you could do. It is better to say “alright” than to murder people. Just saying.
