The NHL to launch a social networking site
The [tag]National Hockey League[/tag] ([tag]NHL[/tag]) is starting a [tag]social networking[/tag] site similar to MySpace for its fans, called NHL Connect (go to it here: LINK). The service is powered by a version of [tag]Five Across[/tag]‘ Connect Community Builder.
The site is currently in testing, but open for public users. Signing up for an account required an email address, a display name, password, a short profile, and a profile photo. There aren’t many features at the moment, but users can write on their pages as well as join groups. I tried out the [tag]Vancouver Canucks[/tag]‘ group, and the moderation staff is quick to solve any problems.
It’s nice to see the NHL try to catch the social networking bandwagon, but it has a lot of catching up to do. It’ll need to serve more features besides simple message posting; this can be done at many other message boards about hockey online.
UPDATE: On 09 Feb 07, it was announced that Five Across has agreed to being acquired by Cisco Systems. The terms of this agreement are not disclosed. Check out the press release for more details: LINK.
