Things I would change about the iPod 28 May 06

Filed under: I Recommend, Technology — Chris Uncensored @ 12:01 am

I’ve been using my 4th generation iPod (monochrome screen, 20GB) for a little bit more than a year now, and although it’s a great music player in terms of its ease of use, I’ve been thinking a lot recently about what I would change about it to make it more powerful and efficient.

First of all, the iPod’s simplicity lies in its unique click wheel, where all you have to do to scroll down a list of choices to select the song(s) you want played is move your finger in a circular motion. This is an award winning way and it has proved advantageous for Apple.

There are many in the media and on the Internet iPod user community who believe the next iteration of Apple’s iPod will include a larger screen for viewing videos, which means it would get rid of the traditional click wheel and instead opt for an on-screen representation which you would simple use as a click wheel. I believe Apple can do better than that with a touch screen system in place.

Instead, I suggest that further utilization of the touch screen would be the key to making the iPod more intuitive and user friendly. Apple should include the capability for the user to quickly find the song they want by browsing with smart search. The user should be able to write, with his finger, the first few letters of the song/artist/whatever (depends on what screen they’re on) and have the iPod jump to that location. With the advent of cheaper storage, people find themselves storing more and more songs on their MP3 players and it becomes a chore to scroll through pages of titles just to find what they are looking for. With this system of smart searching by finger scribbling in a search query, the new touch screen iPod will save users time and make scrolling a secondary task. We have the technology to do this.
Another thing I suggest adding to the iPod would be the implementation of a sudden motion sensor (SMS), such as the ones Apple features in its MacBook and MacBook Pro laptops. Such a chip is relatively inexpensive and will save time in the thousands of warranty repairs from users who drop their iPods by accident. Upon sensoring a sudden fall, the iPod will park the hard drive in a safe location and no critical files will be damaged.

Just some thoughts while listening to my iPod on the walk home from work.

Cooking with Chris, part 1 23 May 06

Chris’ 3 Sausage Scramble

Ingredients:

  • 1 part crumbled spicy italian sausage
  • 1 part diced breakfast pork sausage
  • 1 part diced smoked sausage
  • 3 eggs or 3 scoops of liquid eggs

Instructions:

  1. Add oil to frying pan and start stovetop at medium heat at the most. We don’t want any sticky pans! They piss off the one who has to clean them. NOTE: If it’s a busboy, proceed without oil, since they’re paid to clean shit. If it’s your wife/girlfriend, add oil, lest you end up on the couch. If it’s yourself, add oil, or you might end up with less eggs due to burnage.
  2. Add sausage to frying pan and let it cook for 30 seconds. Nobody likes cold sausage.
  3. Add eggs. Wait until eggs start getting cooked. Flip the eggs a few times to scramble. Be a man and don’t use a spatula to save yourself the danger of dropping your eggs. Real men know how to flip shit on a pan.

Enjoy~

Nothing lasts forever 12 May 06

Filed under: Personal Opinion — Chris Uncensored @ 11:41 am

As many people already know, the statement that “a diamond lasts forever” is false and a myth spread by jewellery companies to convince women that such items are for them and force men into spending their hard-earned dollars. I reflected upon this fact today when I was uploading photos up to my Photo Gallery.

The actual content of this post has nothing to do with actual diamonds, but rather the realization that nothing really lasts forever. Looking through my computer’s collection of photos, I realize that I can’t really keep ahold of my memories in any everlasting form. I’m already missing some photos from my old computer because of a malicious or accidental sibling erasing them while I was gone, and those were photos from important teenage years. So what can I really do to make sure these memories last?

Printing photos out won’t work because old photographs fade away. I can’t really rely on burning them on CDs or DVDs, because such media will eventually deteriorate over time. I can’t leave them on a hard drive, because of its magnetic nature and the eventual failure of drive mechanisms. Flash drives can get shocked and wiped. I’m uploading them onto Flickr and other services, but they limit the sizes of the photos and how many I can upload at a time, causing a loss in quality and carrying with it the possibility of data loss and depending on the fates of the companies as well. Etching them in stone won’t help, as evidenced from the lack of artifacts from the stone age.
Nothing we create truly lasts forever.
